By Emily Beetleshack
The original author of The Beetle Shack, Emily is a chronic over sharer and collector of unnecessary consumer goods. In a past life Emily was a high school Visual Arts teacher. She always enjoyed the ‘naughty’ kids the most; the ones who were resistant to following the rules and questioned the boundaries. They were interesting, challenging and funny. When she was pregnant with her first child she could be heard saying, “I hope I have a cheeky child, one that speaks his mind and is rebellious in nature”. Unsurprisingly, she did. In the archives of the Beetle Shack you'll find her tales of raising her own ‘spirited’ children whilst swanning about the house dressed as a fruit salad.

If you're spending your holidays at home this Summer, why not organise a House Concert? It's such a wonderful reason to spruce up your garden and get together with friends.

On this occasion we lined up some of our musical friends Mike & Soph McCarthy who are currently travelling around Australia playing gigs and booking private concerts in the homes of music lovers* as well as the amazing Pepa Knight. Special guest Will Small provided a pensive pause to the tunes with a short Spoken Word performance - seriously AMAZING stuff. Get yourself to his website stat and prepare yourself for goose bumps!

We kept things super simple on the home front scattering IKEA chairs and rickety road side stools around the front yard. Large checkered picnic blankets allowed out guests to comfortably sit on the grass while leather ottomans  provided another seating option.

Fairy lights and tiny candles ensured the mood was ambient.

Everybody bought their own drinks and we made a massive bunch of home made hummus and pitta bread. Cheap and easy always wins, right?

It was such a wonderful evening with minimal fuss and fanfare. We were able to support some of our mates by charging $20 at the door that was split between each of the performers.

If you're looking for fun ways of gathering with friends, do consider organising a house concert. It can be indoors our out and the musical talent will bring their own PA which means all you need to do is invite your buddies and throw a rug on the floor!

Tell me, do you love entertaining at home? Have you had a house concert before?

*this could be you, get in touch with Mike & Soph HERE if you'd like to book them in when they're in your state sometime during 2015.
