SUMMER HOLIDAY AT HOME | ENTERTAINING OUTDOORS

By Emily Beetleshack
The original author of The Beetle Shack, Emily is a chronic over sharer and collector of unnecessary consumer goods. In a past life Emily was a high school Visual Arts teacher. She always enjoyed the ‘naughty’ kids the most; the ones who were resistant to following the rules and questioned the boundaries. They were interesting, challenging and funny. When she was pregnant with her first child she could be heard saying, “I hope I have a cheeky child, one that speaks his mind and is rebellious in nature”. Unsurprisingly, she did. In the archives of the Beetle Shack you'll find her tales of raising her own ‘spirited’ children whilst swanning about the house dressed as a fruit salad.

We've been lucky enough to receive a lovely timber table and outdoors chairs for IKEA to see us through the Summer months. Perfect timing really as the rickety old hand me downs we've had for the past few years have well and truly past their used by date. We chose the Hogsten Chairs which are decidedly comfortable and sit really nicely amongst the kitchen garden. So far they haven't stained and have survived several beatings from our rambunctious children- winning. The Applaro Table is perfect for smaller spaces and has two drop leaves that will take the seating up from 4 to 8 with ease. We mix in some toad side finds (seriously, the chairs people throw out these days) and top up with these simple staking metal numbers which are a steal at $30 a pop.

When the weather is warm we love to take and icy cold beer into the garden while the kids play under the sprinklers or in the sand pit. It's too hot to light our home made Wood Fired Pizza oven at the moment but once the sun sets, we turn on the fairy lights and burn citronella candles to keep the mozzies at bay.

I've layered pattern and texture via soft furnishings from my favourites The Toucan Shop (ootomi) and Beyond Marrakech (tapestry pillows). The Sheep Skin is from IKEA - a treasure I bought last year during winter.

Tell me, do you enjoy dining outdoors when the weather is balmy?

  1. Emily this looks so gorgeous and inviting, I'd want to linger out there with a glass of wine as well! Our outdoor area is a work in progress, but I'mm looking forward to nights in front of the outdoor fireplace surrounded by the veggie garden.

  2. Hi Emily,
This looks beautiful! I want to eat all my meals at that table.
I love the new blog header and layout as well as the range of content. One thing that would make me like it even more is the first few lines of the blog entry showing up on the main page before you click the link.
I especially love all the summery garden shots you have had in the last few weeks.

  3. It's more work taking it outside, but the change of scene makes supper more relaxing and fun. I like how you incorporated the furry pillow in the mix. Summer and winter comforts!
