A few people have emailed me asking to see better photos of our new kitchen. You’d have to know the ‘before’ to really appreciate the transformation (unfortunately I don’t have a full before photo to show you). I’m talking early 90’s oak cabinets and black granite with beige floor tiles that were all boxed off with huge dividing walls. The walls were quickly demolished – which immediately opened up the space to be a much more user-friendly area. Floor boards were layed, and a kitchen heavy on clever storage was fitted.

The two things I was most excited about were finally being able to fit a large family-size fridge, we chose a french door style one from Fisher + Paykell. A bigger pantry was also on top of my wishlist, and that’s certainly what I got. In fact, behind the sliding door has become Sunday’s favourite new hiding space.

Before moving back in, I decided to cull the mess of half empty flour and sugar packets and start fresh. I turned Martha Stewart (and as a visiting friend recently pointed out, a little OCD), with the help of all the good quality food storage options at Freedom. I’m never using anything cheap and nasty from the supermarket to store food again. The tight closure and quality of the perspex range is so impressive, and I love how easily you can stack the varied sizes. I made my own stick on labels for the canisters and I’ve also got a ‘cool and dark ‘ spot for all those potatoes and onions. I’ve got to say, being OCD has totally paid off!

I did some research before re-stocking the pantry, and thought I’d share a pantry essentials list that I’ve put together from a combination of a few I came across:

Extra-virgin olive oil
Sesame oil
Canola oil
White wine vinegar
Red wine vinegar
Balsamic vinegar
Soy sauce
Worcestershire sauce
Tabasco sauce
Tomato sauce
Honey
Maple syrup
Dijon mustard
Whole grain mustard
Oyster sauce
Fish sauce

Plain flour
Whole wheat flour
Baking powder
Dried yeast
Caster sugar
Brown sugar
Unsweetened cocoa powder
Cornstarch
Desiccated coconut

Canned cannellini beans
Canned kidney beans
Canned diced tomatos
Canned tuna
Canned coconut milk
Canned lentils
Anchovies
Capers

Couscous
Basmati rice
Brown rice
Oatmeal
Pasta
Polenta
Arborio rice

Dried herbs:
Basil
Rosemary
Thyme
Garlic powder
Cumin
Oregano
Nutmeg
Chilli flakes
Cinnamon
Sea salt
Ground pepper

An essential  list obviously comes down to personal taste and dietary requirements, but it’s certainly working for me and my little family.

I hope you are all having a great week,
