The Things you Learn at Thirty One

The merits of the hot wash.

Thats right, I'm 31 and never before in my life have I utilised the hot wash. WHAT THE HELL WAS I THINKING!?

It's SO good!

I mean, things just come out SO CLEAN. I know, I know - i'm utilising the capitals with vigour but it's such a revelation.

Stains, gone.

1 cup of regular washing powder. Nothing fancy (although I have given up on the Aldi stuff) and bam!

For the past 12 years I've been doing laundry. It's been a wonderfully nourishing and rewarding journey but now, at the age of 31 I feel like i've 'arrived'.

In other breaking washing news; does anyone have any natural washing powder recipes that they swear by?

Are you at hot washer?
Are you 31?

Look, it's all really interesting, isn't it.

  2. I'm a warm/cold washer but you have ALMOST converted me.
I am currently 27 but I will someday be 31 which means there's still hope for me to become a hot washer.

  4. I always heard that there should be the fear of shrinkage and stains staying put in hot washes. I always use cold... but maybe I should go and berate my mother for her one-side view.
24 and still calling my Mum about my washing sometimes.
    Over and out.

  5. I've always been scared of a hot wash and not ONCE done it. Doesn't it shrink your thinks that have stretch in it?? To get stains out I put bi-carb in every wash and use vinegar instead of softener :)

  6. Confession: I've never done a hot wash :/ i thought it shrunk your clothes? I'm a cold washer always, always, always! :)

  9. I'll be 38 in a few days - officially in my late thirties. I don't know about you but I consider 37 to be mid-thirties :-) I usually always do my bedding and towels in a hot wash after I read that dust mites and other invisible creepy crawlies will only die in a 60 degree or higher wash. x

  10. 32. Not really a hot washer - scared of shrinking - also fed up of stains though. I use EcoStore powder and soda crystals.
Im going to take the plunge and try hot!

Ive heard soapnuts are are good - and I mean to make my own powder ... but eco brilliant ideas and my actual reality are pretty far apart in this house!

  12. I wash in hot when there are stains but even hot water won't rid the loads from the dreaded bloody tissue in the wash!! Yes at 36 I still forget that people don't empty their pockets like I do! 😁

  13. I have also just discovered hot wash this week! But at 37 it took me a bit longer, and I've yet to get this month's power bill so don't call me converted just yet...

  14. I'm a cold washer... But I do occasionally run the nappies through on a hot wash!
I make my own laundry liquid but haven't come across a powder that's convinced me yet. However, the laundry liquid is amazing! It's the recipe from Rhonda at Down To Earth! :) Oh and the best bit is that it's $1.79 for 10L!!! Yep, that's all!! Here's the recipe.

  15. I would love to be able to do a hot wash! I have always been a hot washer but now our laundry is under the house in a little lean to and quite frankly I am lucky there is even cold water to wash with! One day I will get hot water plumbed in and then I will hot wash again!
I use Eco Store laundry powder. I would say it is just okay…but I think that is partly because I can only wash in cold water!

  16. I didn't know that! Thank you for telling me before I'm 31 : ). For some reason I thought that hot could harm the clothes or shrink them or something? I don't even really know...

  17. 35. I only wash cloth diapers on hot, hot, hot. Everything else is cold. I have used homemade laundry soap before, but have yet to find the combination I really love. Now I'm going to check out all the links ... heehee.

  18. I wash mostly on warm because the gas bill would be too high if I used hot very often. I'm going on 36 and I feel pretty good about my laundry prowess, but it was a long road. :)

  19. Guilty of cold-washin' it all the way, and I'm a *little* bit older than you ;)...........but like @Within That Land, I'm afraid of the power bill, in addition to the fear of shrinkage.

  20. mama of 3 boys 4 y-o and under . YES to the 31 years old and the hot wash!! I love your 'week in stills' series......makes me appreciate all the little things our home.

  21. I use the Down To Earth recipe + soap nuts. And sometimes I use Eco Store or Aldi, but never do a hot wash. Probably because I put Napisan in pretty much every load, haha. The Down to Earth liquid stuff is really easy to make, and so cheap. I love it. (I put some eucalyptus oil in with mine because I like pretty smells)

    2. I turned 34 last month - don't puke, it's ok. I'm finding the years heading to my mid-thirties to be quite quite good. I hope yours will too! Happy birthday for next week :)

  23. Soap nuuts! They rock. I only started using hot washes because I used cloth nappies with my daughter. Love it!

  24. Em, you are a wise woman. You had this revelation at 31. I am 33 & am only just learning this today because of you. Thank you xx

  25. I do sheets and so forth in a hot wash. Also SOILED UNDERWEAR. Toilet training underwear, if you get my drift. I find it satisfying. Do clothes and that it cold tho. Also, I am 34. As old as the hills.

  26. ha ha, i found out about the hot wash just a year ago, too (at 28years!), and i felt like writing in capitals too. but i call it a strip wash, and try to only use it when the shirts are starting to smell sweaty.
i dont' have a natural washing liquid yet, but have recently found out about the merits of bicarb, vinegar and hydrogen peroxide with stain removal.

  27. Em - our front loader has all these fancy options for different types of washes but i always stick with the 30 min cycle as its quick...unfortunately it only washes to 30deg, nothing more...the hot wash cycle options are 1hr and over! Im with you on the Aldi stuff, its abit ho-hum...I use earthcare brand or EcoStore (nz product) i want to get into making my own too:) I always add a dash of water soluable Lavender oil (suitable for cleaning and stuff) ...it makes all the washing smell DEVINE!

  28. Hi I'm Babs and I'm a hot washer, I swear by my front loader and Aldi powder. I also love red wine. xoxo
