Artist Series - Lauren Merrick {and a very fabulous giveaway}

If you've been hanging around The Beetle Shack for a while you would've heard Lauren's name pop up more than once. Merrick is a talented illustrator with gift for innocent, endearing characters (ehum, much like those pictured above) and fruity typography. Her work is contemporary whilst maintaining individuality and creative integrity. Gauche, watercolour and high quality paper complete her kit. However, her skills aren't limited to the paint brush. Merrick is also available for customised blog headers, wedding invitations, birth announcements (that was ours that you can see above), party invitations and graphic design. She has recently opened an online store to sell prints of her beautiful watercolour works and a range of fabulous cards.

It must also be said that Lauren is a darling friend to our family. She is a gorgeous thing who comes and plays with my children with such excitement and intentionality that her visits always leave me smiling from ear to ear.

You can find Lauren Merrick Illustration on Facebook here, read her inspiring blog here, check our her portfolio here or shop from her range of cards and prints here (currently on a massive sale). If you would like to order a customised print, card or blog header please contact Lauren here for a quote.

I asked Lauren a few questions which she answered below and underneath that is a very exciting giveaway for bloggers and art lovers alike.

*What/ who inspired you to to be an illustrator?
I grew up reading beautiful children's books I was always so inspired by the way illustrators could capture and create imaginary worlds, especially when they didn't illustrate EVERYTHING, just enough to spark my own imagination.
*Is there an artist that you turn to for inspiration when you need it?
- Jon Klassen
- Oliver Jeffers - Alison Lester
* What is your favourite colour?
Navy Blue, Terracotta, Duck Egg Blue and Mustard Yellow are my favourite colours at the moment.
*Is there a symbol that you find yourself using repeatedly in your work? Can you explain it to us?
I draw trees a lot, I think I just really like trees and like to include them in my illustrations as much as I can so that people remember that there are supposed to be trees in our world and in our daily lives.
* What is your happiest childhood memory?
Anytime playing with my sisters, we used to explore the rockpools and imagine we were mermaids, constantly play dress ups and put on dance concerts.
* What is your greatest achievement?
I got an award at my graduate exhibition for my illustration porfolio, but I'm not sure my greatest achievement has happened yet, it's still early days and I'm really excited to discover whats ahead.

          * Did it take long to truly develop your own style?
I spent three years studying design and illustration and prior to that spent my whole school and pre-schooling time drawing so its probably taken my whole life and will continue to grow and change. I've always drawn and seen things a certain way but the time I spent at TAFE experimenting with EVERY medium and style I could imagine really helped me find my style, I'm in love with watercolour at the moment, but am looking forward to learning and developing new illustration skills.
