Down, But Not Out

In a cruel twist of fate, our family was shot down with a stomach bug early this week.

When Zeph started vomiting, I started praying, not for him and his health but for me (because i'm selfish like that). Please, please, please could I be spared violent convulsions whilst stooped over the porcelain throne two weeks post c section, please?

No?

okay.

As the bug swiftly engulfed the entire family (leaving Elke alone, fortunately) I found myself in the all too familiar position of calling mum and dad. God bless parents and their never ending 'presentness' - don't ask me what I would do with out them.

Mum and Dad arrived within half an hour to take the big kids for the morning. When they returned some 6 hours later, Dave and I had still not risen from our crumpled bed sheets. We had slept the entire time, waking only to feed Elke and unenthusiastically change her nappy.

Fortunately, a couple of days of rest was all it took to see this little family back up and at 'em.

Yesterday we packed ourselves up and headed to a deserted, waterfront park, one of our favourites, for a play and a pic-nic. Talking like pirates (it's a 'boat' park, after all) and enacting desperate rescue scenarios kept us entertained for over an hour until the drive back home ensured sweet slumber was upon us again.

Here's to good health... until the next bug rolls around.

*photo's from a previous park trip last week. See that coffee cup next to me in the top image- that was my last coffee for quite some time. It would appear that caffeine and dairy upset Elke's baby tum.

  5. I don't blame you for not wanting to get it! Bad enough looking after sick kids with a newborn, but getting it yourself. Wow, you must feel stripped of all energy. Heal Shack family.
ps can I adopt your parents? They sound amazing

  7. Oh we went through the same when our third was 8 weeks old. She ended up in hospital to prevent dehydration and we ended up infecting my parents and sister too because they'd been helping us. So not fun. Glad you're all ok again.

  8. Oh that is tough luck you poor thing. Mine couldn't handle caffeine either, switch straight to decaf, the tea is not too bad if the coffee sucks. A hot drink fixes most things otherwise. Hope you all bounce back quickly and thank goodness the bub is well. mel x

  9. Oh no Em, that completely sucks, you poor thing! I had the flu and bronchitis when I went into labour with Everly and was still unwell for days following her birth - I had to press a pillow hard against the incision while I had coughing fits. Not to mention vomiting for the first entire day of her life (no food for two days mixed with drugs for the pain - awesome!). I feel for you! I'm glad you're all feeling better now. Everly couldn't handle dairy either, but it took me a lot longer to figure that out, so good on you for discovering it early. x

  13. The no coffee thing was the worst! All I wanted after months of missing my coffee was a strong, hot flat white. But no...my little guy couldn't handle it either.
I am glad that you are all feeling better...here's to keeping bugs at bay!

  14. Oh lovely!! The gut wrenches after a C-section! That is just plain mean. Glad to hear all is on the mend. Boo to no caffeine and dairy. Remy was exactly the same...it all started with those wee little squares they give you in the hospital with a cup of tea! :) x

  15. I hope you are on the mend. This binge back such painful memories when we bought our number 3 home the big two got sick. Consequently our wee baby then spent 6 weeks in hospital on oxygen as the same virus hit her so hard. Please take care x

  16. oh no!! Not to make your whole family's tummy-bug seem minor (coz i know it aint), Our little Ida is 11weeks and in that short time I've had mastitis twice, Mr4 hand foot & mouth and now both Mr4 & Miss 11weeks have whooping cough!! So unfair, so i know what its like to be down an out & struggling! Hugs to you fellow mama X

  21. Oh no, sorry to hear that. I'm glad you're all on the mend now.

I remember my eldest got chicken pox the day we brought her little brother home from hospital. It's like she was saying "I'm still here, don't forget about me!" x

  22. I can't imagine not having at least one set of grandparents close by to call when that kind of illness strikes. There isn't much you can do but ride it out in bed. We were struck down a few times last year with a gastro. It's just awful. Glad you are all better now x
