Hold the Phone

Like I said yesterday, we've been hit by yet another round of the boogers. It's been several nights since Dave and I have enjoyed the luxury of having the bed to ourselves, the kids are constantly covered in snot and salty tears can be found rolling down the cheeks of little ones at any time of the day or night.

Our weekend plans will be canceled in favour of couch slouching in the hope of recovering more quickly.

Despite the snot fest, I find myself feeling incredibly blessed.

Blessed with warm beds covered in woollen blankets, a husband who can stay home from work for that extra hour until everyone is fed and dressed. Blessed with parents who'll look after me and wipe my kids grubby faces with warm washers before making us toasted sandwiches (thanks dad).

The days have been slow and quiet and I'm revelling in extra cuddles and my new happiness.

Tell me you've got exciting plans for the weekend. Go on, do it.

Hiding Out

photo's by Tim from this shoot.

We're all a little under the weather 'round these parts. Today I've escaped the filth of my own home for the comfort of my mum and dads.  They have central heating, a large t.v and a fridge that's always stocked with delicious food. Three things our place lacks.

While the kids have an ABC marathon, i'm snacking on left over pavlova and visiting your blogs. When I return home, my house will be clean and with any luck the kids will have a sleep.

Life is fabulously interesting.

Some Perspective

I often despair about the state of my home. It's a reoccurring theme here at The Beetle Shack.

Being a pleasure seeker, tidiness doesn't come naturally. I'd rather be doing just about anything else. Painting in my studio, reading stories to the kids, building Duplo towers or couch slouching all sound appealing.

Yet sometimes I still get that pang of anxiety about the fluff balls down the hall.

Do you know whose wise voice springs to my mind at those times?

The voice of a wonderfully fabulous woman who I have known all of my life. I grew up with her children and completely adore them. She is creative and interesting and very, very clean.

Way back here she left this message;

"My kids have never thanked me for being clean. They only remember the time you spend with them".

Today as I tried to do twenty seven million things at once (none of which i did very well) I heard her words .... and did nothing about it.... but tomorrow, TOMORROW, I'll be the worlds best mother- promise.

'They only remember the time you spend with them'.

Tools down mums.

also, if you're interested in being a sponsor of The Beetle Shack, I'd love to have you on board. I've made a few changes to the packages- just head over here to check it out.

With the Rising Sun

Behind foggy windows and bleary eyes, we sip coffee while he draws.

I love to watch his lines appear on crisp white paper. He works without hesitation, kind of like Pollock.

it's okay, i'm his mum- i'm allowed to compare him to the masters.

While the Kids Slept

Things have been busy 'round here and Dave and I have found ourselves snarling at each other far more often than usual. We're craving a break from real life, but until that happens we'll do our best to switch up the routine and make time for the things we enjoy

This weekend we packed up some fresh home made pizza and icy cold beers and drove to a favourite lookout. While the kids slept, we sat with the warm winter sun on our backs and pretended we didn't have a house to clean, a garden to maintain and washing to do.

It was rejuvenating.

In other news, dave is now sporting this incredibly sexy mo. I like it. It makes me laugh every time I see him. every. time.

better enter this giveaway for some new skincare too.

tomorrow's monday again, bros.
It's all good.

STOP- Think of Ryan Gosling.

Each Wednesday morning I receive a group text from one of my favourite park ladies. It usually suggests a time for our ritualistic coffee and park date followed by about fifteen 'mummy banter' responses.

Yesterday my text went a little something like 'I've called in an SOS to the husband- he'll be home in 10 minutes lest I loose my mind for good. Gonna be late' - naturally, a barrage of 'i-know-how-u-feel-I'm-there-too-kids-are-cute-but-they-are-so-annnoying' texts fly back and forth.

Then a text came through that changed my life.

'We need a strategy- lets try this. You feel yourself getting angry. You think you might yell at your kids. STOP. think of Ryan Gosling*... smile, giggle even. See, now there's no need to yell.'

My park mums know whats up. Fee, you know whats up (lize, johnny depp is pretty good too- he's helped me out of a spot of trouble once before).

Want to join us? All you need to do is STOP before getting cranky and think of Ryan, go on, do it for your kids.

* being the sacrificial lamb that i am- i googled 'rayn gosling naked'- this was the best i could do. But really, we should objectify men more often.... for the good of our children... you know?!

Wearing- Knitted Cape

Many years ago I bought myself a large knitted blanket that turned into a poncho via a long zipper. It's been a favourite winter staple - it can be thrown on the bed as an extra layer, be a pic-nic blanket when traveling, baby blanket while out or a huge delicious jacket to keep the chill from my skin.

When I saw this cape at Country Road recently- it also had to be mine.

Dreaming

We had a party filled weekend last weekend - it'd been a while since Dave and I had a night together away from the kids but it means i'm still exhausted and endless nights of broken sleep have done little to help.

I'm dreaming of a holiday, somewhere warm and still.
I'm dreaming of a fat bank balance so it could actually happen.
I'm tired.

Funnily enough posts from exactly this time last year are taunting me. We had a winter holiday.

A Sea of Black Umbrellas

Under cloud laden skies and to the rhythm on rain dropping on a sea of black umbrellas, we witnessed the marriage of two precious friends.

As they softly promised to love one another for the rest of their days I couldn't help but reflect upon the immense privilege that it is the be part of such a sacred occasion. The meeting of two hearts and the joining of two lives, forever.

The day was particularly special as the Groom was the best man at our wedding some ten years ago and his sister is one of my dearest friends.

So we dressed up, drank wine and danced.

The day was documented by this amazing photographer
You can see Mike and Soph's engagement shoot here.

p.s i've pinched photo's from my friends instagram feeds.

Potty Mouth

If there's one thing I'm loving about being this kids mother, it's the poo talk. Just about anything can be turned into a poo topic.

Because it's so wonderful and I never want to forget the time when poo discussions were completely comfortable and common place, I thought i'd start writing a list and add to it as new poo topics arise.

Would you like some sultanas Zephie, 'no, they're POO-tanas. They're brown like poo.

What would you like on your toast Zeph? Vegiemite or jam? No, POO. Poo on toast thanks mum.

Mum, i did a pop off. It smells like POO

I'm gonna eat this food and it's going to go through my tummy and come out my 'botton' as POO and it's going to be POO.

The inner genius of my 3 year olds mind contains so much poo thought, and i'm glad it does.

In other news, I'm still working hard on getting this story written- my words aren't flowing and it's taking so long to get my overly emotional thoughts on paper. It's coming though- maybe next week.

Wearing: Floral

It's only natural that after yesterday's confessions I would want to jump straight back into something superficial. So here, look at me standing awkwardly in a swampy mangrove trying to show off my new floral dress.

Nothing like a little bit of floral for the winter months, right? Even better is a floral frock that takes you right through 3 seasons, like this one. It's light weight, has floaty sleeves and a sweet split through the upper back- perfect for layering. Best part, it was only $50 (I love being able to buy women's clothing online).

It Got Me Thinking About Honesty

Mum's like to boast don't they? yes, my mum does too. When ever she is afforded the opportunity she will speak with love and pride of her two children and grandchildren.

She tells her friends that I have this silly little online space aka The Beetle Shack and I suppose some of them visit from time to time.

I only know this because mum mentioned that a dear friend of hers had said that she loved this blog and then jested that she always felt depressed after reading because my house is so clean.

It got me thinking about honesty.

If I'm honest, my house is filth. Ask my kids, husband, friends or family and they will confirm that I am not a natural house keeper. I let clutter pile up and then allow dust to gather on the clutter. There are often fluff balls in the hall way and dishes in the sink. The kids scatter their lunch and their toys all over the house several times a day, I can't compete with their speed and agility so sometimes I just shrug my shoulders and make a cup of tea. When it's time to tidy up, I open the nearest draw, cupboard, wardrobe and shovel things in.

If I'm honest, my husband and I bicker from time to time daily and so do our children, I often don't think about making dinner until we're all starving and the washing only gets done when there are no socks and undies left in the draws.

It got me thinking about intention.

If I write and it makes another woman/person feel inadequate or inferior then I am only doing myself a disservice. If I post something here and it only tells a half truth, the half that makes me look like an amazing house keeper, phenomenal baker, attentive wife and sacrificial mother, then I half lie* and I do so out of an insecurity that the full truth will not be good enough.

It got me thinking about community.

We are a community here in this blog world. Right here in this very space I have met people that encourage, support and inspire me with their stories. Some live in enviable homes, some have amazing careers, others have natural style and designer threads. But for me, there is one very simple fact for us mothers.

We wipe arses for a living!

We do.

Those of us that leave the home for work wipe bums when we get back in, those that are house bound wipe bums all day. Those of us that use cloth nappies wipe bums and those of us that prefer the Aldi brand wipe bums too.

But we do more than that don't we. We sit on the (unwashed) floors in our trackies and build duplo towers, we give and receive I love you's at whim, we snuggle under pastel bedlinen and we wipe sweet little pinchable butt.

We all do it. Each and every one of us. We all have dust on our floors and food in our teeth (shit- is that just me? Who has time for daily brushing?) and if we lead anyone to believe that we don't, then we lie (or we have A LOT of help).

I love the idea that we as women can truly support one another by acknowledging our faults and set backs and praising our victories. That the way we choose to birth, feed and raise our babies can fade into the background while we get on with the business of being a community that encourages differences and acknowledges what its really like.

* obviously it would be impossible and ridiculously boring to share every hum drum moment of every day on a blog. It is right and natural that we share the good in our lives, but for me the good comes in all forms- failings, successes, strengths and weaknesses.
